ASTHI VISARJAN IN VARANASI (KASHI)

Asthi Visarjan in Hindu Religion

In Hinduism, Asthi Visarjan is a highly significant religious ritual. The word Asthi refers to the remaining bones and ashes collected after cremation. Once the last rites are completed, these remains are carefully gathered, usually wrapped in a sacred cloth, and later immersed in flowing water—preferably a holy river.
This sacred act of immersing the ashes is known as Asthi Visarjan, and it is considered a mandatory ritual for Hindus after death.

Importance of Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi

Varanasi, also known as Kashi, holds immense spiritual importance for Asthi Visarjan. Every year, thousands of devotees visit Varanasi to perform this ritual along with other sacred ceremonies for their departed loved ones.

The process involves immersing the ashes into the holy River Ganga, accompanied by prayers, offerings, and Vedic chants. The ritual is traditionally guided by an experienced Hindu priest (Pandit), who ensures that all customs are performed correctly.

It is believed that immersing the ashes in the Ganga liberates the soul from the cycle of birth and rebirth (moksha). This sacred ritual brings peace to the departed soul and provides emotional comfort to the grieving family.

Varanasi is revered as the City of Moksha, and it is believed that anyone who dies here is freed from the cycle of life and death. Even if a person passes away outside Kashi, immersing their ashes in the Ganga at Varanasi is believed to grant salvation.

Story Behind Asthi Visarjan in Varanasi

According to Hindu belief, a powerful legend explains the sanctity of Asthi Visarjan in Kashi:

Once, a Brahmin lived far from Kashi and did not follow religious duties throughout his life. One day, while wandering in a forest, he was killed by a tiger. A vulture later picked up a piece of his flesh and flew away. Coincidentally, while flying over the River Ganga in Kashi, a part of that flesh fell into the holy waters.

Meanwhile, the soul of the Brahmin was taken to Yamlok, where Yamraj ordered punishment for his sins. At that very moment, divine messengers arrived and informed Yamraj that since the mortal remains of the Brahmin had touched the sacred Ganga in Kashi, his sins were washed away and he had attained moksha.

This legend reinforces the belief that Asthi Visarjan in the Ganga at Kashi has the power to cleanse all sins and grant salvation, which is why people from across the world bring ashes of their loved ones to Varanasi.
